Foreword
By
Wing Commander MIKE A SMART MA RAF
Officer
Commanding No.10 Squadron
Today,
the 14 October 2005 marks the formal disbandment of Number 10
Squadron, one
of the finest and oldest Squadrons in the Royal Air Force. 10
Squadron has a long and
proud history and you only have to look at the number of Battle
Honours awarded to get an appreciation of the heritage of this
remarkable Squadron. Indeed, only a few months ago the Squadron
received its 18th Battle Honour "IRAQ 2003" in
recognition of the dangers the Squadron faced and the utmost
professionalism of its air and ground crews during the Iraq War;
a fitting legacy for our future generations to remember us by.
From
its very beginning on 1 January 1915, with the men pooled from a
nucleus supplied by Number 1 Reserve Squadron and the Squadron's
move to St Omer on 25 July 1915, 10 Squadron has never stopped
being in the action, in a myriad of roles, around the world. It
is therefore with great sadness that a Squadron of this stature,
with such history and having had a tradition of having some of
the finest and most honourable airmen and airwomen ever to have
served, that 10 Squadron finds its Standard being laid to rest
once more.
However,
in the finest tradition of the Royal Air Force and indeed 10
Squadron, nothing that the Squadron has achieved over the last
90 years will be forgotten and the Squadron Motto "Rem Acu
Tangere" (to hit the mark) so apt, will live on in all our
heans. I personally have been immensely proud to have been the
Officer Commanding and will never forget my time on the
Squadron, its history or the men and women that have fought and
died whilst on 10 Squadron.
